The mobile phone business is aiming for the individual monetization of each connected device

A system incentivizes basic users to voluntarily upgrade their initial plans to higher tiers.

Telecommunications companies worldwide face a considerable financial challenge, and Argentina is no exception. The number of devices with access to mobile networks is growing at an unprecedented rate. Smartwatches, everyday wearable accessories, and cars with factory-installed internet are among the recently launched commercial technologies.

These innovations include the deployment of fifth-generation (5G) networks , direct satellite connections to mobile phones, and core network segmentation techniques for industrial applications. Given this landscape, connectivity providers are facing increasing pressure to achieve a return on investment in physical infrastructure made in recent years. The relentless search for new revenue streams is vital to ensuring the survival of these companies in the short and medium term.

In a macroeconomic environment as complex and volatile as the local one, an unavoidable financial urgency arises for all industry players. Large companies urgently need to find concrete technological solutions to generate immediate incremental economic benefits . Network operators face the imperative of designing effective business models capable of eliminating their exclusive dependence on systematic price increases for monthly residential data plans.

Monthly rates have implicit caps tied to the end user's actual purchasing power. For this reason, technical innovation in the service through new software appears to be the most sensible way to improve the overall profitability of the mobile industry on a large scale. It is precisely at this crucial point in the data transmission business that so-called rights servers for lines and numbers become relevant.

What is an Entitlement Server and why does it change the rules of business?

Entitlement Server (ES) is a software component that acts in daily practice as the ultimate authority for network usage policies and remotely handles the autonomous and detailed provisioning of each subscriber user.

These servers, called Entitlement Servers, operate conceptually as a powerful computing engine located midway between each mobile phone's operating system and the operator's core network. In this way, the centralized server is positioned as a secure gateway to multiple novel revenue streams .

Its nationwide implementation allows telephone companies to manage the vast local stock of millions of active devices, with the ability to transform this dispersed volume of devices into a continuous source of new revenue , generated from a matrix of monthly paid commercial accesses. This enables the presentation to users of business models that, until very recently, were unprecedented due to the limitations historically imposed on terminal manufacturers.

Tim Hatt , head of Research and Consulting at GSMA Intelligence, stated that there is a global business opportunity to move in this commercial direction. The financial impact of large-scale deployment of this server technology is measurable and highly projectable. According to GSMA Intelligence reports, the complete implementation of a server with these characteristics generates a prolonged series of measurable improvements.

These business improvements, calculated in different regions of the world, range from a 15% to a 30% increase in average revenue per subscriber . This software, deeply integrated into the network, acts as an engine for generating direct revenue from additional services and also serves as an effective customer retention tool, capable of reducing the overall churn rate.

Automatic upsells, instant 5G, and on-demand satellites

The system incentivizes users of the most basic service levels to voluntarily upgrade their initial plans to higher categories of consumption and download speed. The central platform facilitates a high volume of additional sales in almost instantaneous time for the consumer, relative to the catalog of available features.

It allows for immediate, automated access to fifth-generation networks enabled by the neighborhood antenna, as well as the issuance of temporary usage passes to enable satellite connections. It also provides access to the interconnectivity intended for each customer's complementary equipment, such as smartwatches and tablets, linked through a robust system to real-time control of connection patterns within the integrated rights platform.

GSMA Intelligence analysts also detail other projections of significant commercial interest to decision-makers. The consultancy estimates that various operators can increase their total net revenue by between 20% and 25% through the sale of exclusive and attractive communication services. At the same time, providers can achieve internal financial savings by reducing expenses related to daily operations that jeopardize capital preservation.

Estimates point to reductions of between 15% and 20% in expenses related to IT provisioning for communications services. These improvements are further complemented by cuts of up to 40% in recurring operating costs for extensive network maintenance .

Brazil has already done it: Argentina is looking to mirror that success

All of this data was presented in detail at a specialized virtual seminar focused on the mobile market. Commercial experiences in the region illustrate the scale of operational opportunities near Argentina's borders. Evidence from Brazil serves as a mirror reflecting the complexity of the current commercial landscape for any local operator.

A large Brazilian enterprise company with over eighty million subscribers implemented Motive 's control technology platform following a recent launch and saw revenue growth immediately after activating the technology on its networks. This company became the first operator in the region to launch rapid transfer of digital cellular profiles on Apple's iOS devices and achieved a 63% year-over-year increase in total virtual profile downloads.

Meanwhile, another major Brazilian operator, a subsidiary of Telefónica , positioned itself as a pioneer by launching chip-based silent authentication, with Google as its first major corporate client at scale. Both of these cases, tested in border regions, are relevant to the Argentine connectivity industry because the parent companies of these two businesses have extensive operations throughout the country.

For the Argentinian market, where terminal upgrades are often significantly delayed due to long-standing import barriers and high hardware costs, the risk of falling behind in server modernization poses a substantial threat. Companies in the sector risk losing incremental revenue, seeing their daily operating costs escalate, and being left behind in the race for service innovation.

The operator regains control

Historically, telecommunications players have warned investors about the dangers of relinquishing complete control over the end-user experience to global software manufacturers like Apple or Google. The Entitlement Server returns the central role to the local operator, allowing them to once again manage and monetize all native features on devices , rather than being reduced to the role of a mere data transport provider unable to add value to their pricing.

The server reinstalls the local company as the entity in charge of policy execution and shifts remote control of the device from the operating system's default settings to a business logic conceived by the Internet access provider corporation itself.

When a mobile phone requests a new network capability, such as enabling satellite backup in remote areas or unlocking access to a 5G band, that request must necessarily go through a filter at the local operator's authorization layer before the original manufacturer's infrastructure can fulfill it.

Motive Entitlement Server as a foundation for richer services and experiences

Jeevithan Muttu , senior vice president and general manager of Motive's device management division, explained to iProfesional the fundamental importance of the change in the remote control scheme for pay-as-you-go lines. He spoke about the near future of the global market.

"We're at the point where we can talk about networks powered by the Entitlement Server. The ES is the foundation for richer services and experiences , and also the anchor for preventing fraud such as SIM fraud, fake provisioning, and other identity misuse. It's also the key to unlocking new revenue streams and identity-based use cases, such as enterprise services and advanced connectivity," Muttu said.

Muttu outlined the recommendations for companies facing the change: "The Entitlement Server is a standards-driven product. It is agnostic to the network core, so it can be integrated with any vendor. When selecting an Entitlement Server, it is advisable to consider the vendor's reliability and roadmap, flexibility and time to market, and scalability and performance."
